Fighting lung cancer with bacteria

Still to go

from €5,000 (1%)

We are an interdisciplinary team of students who are independently developing a treatment for lung cancer alongside our studies. We hope to contribute to a world where cancer treatments have no side effects and people can live healthier longer lives.

A lung cancer treatment without side effects

Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with over 10 million deaths annually. Conventional treatments—surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation—have significant side effects that lower the quality of life. The average lung cancer patient loses five healthy years because of this. There is a need for new treatments that are not only more effective but also work without side effects.

We need your help

We cannot do this alone. We are being assisted by top researchers with lab work, receiving input from hospitals, and receive financial support from the university and our business partners. But to make our project a reality, we also need your help. With your donation, you contribute to our project and our events aimed at inspiring the next generation of students.

We appreciate every contribution and will place everyone who donates in our hall of fame, which will be permanently displayed on our project wiki. We also want to keep you updated through our exclusive newsletter. Furthermore, we look forward to seeing you at the mini-jamboree, our event where various student teams present their work in synthetic biology, and where our supervisors and partners will also be present. At the end of the year, we will look back on the project, and we would also like to thank you personally at our end drinks.
Note: please check the option to share your contact information with us so that we can invite you for this.

We are nine students independently setting up this project

The student team iGEM TU/e 2024 consists of nine students from various programs who work on this project alongside their studies. We are motivated by hands-on learning and gaining experience to make an impact on the world. We are supported by more than ten experts within the university, but we are responsible for all aspects of this project. We are participating in the iGEM competition, a major international contest focused on solving global problems with synthetic biology, where we will present our project to the world in October.

An immunotherapy that works with the body

We are researching a treatment based on components of bacteria that enables the body to attack tumors itself. This would therefore cause fewer side effects and be more effective. We are also developing a personalized pipeline to tailor the treatment to the individual. Our goal is to create a proof of concept in the lab and contribute to cancer research with our work.
